MEET VANESSA: A MOM ON A MISSION

I grew up in a small town in northern Michigan, where my parents taught me that while federal policies are focused on the big picture, local government truly makes a difference in our daily lives. That stuck with me. In high school, I dove headfirst into leadership as Class President, Student Council President, National Honor Society President, and yearbook editor, all while earning seven varsity letters and graduating at the top of my class.

After earning my BA in Criminal Justice from Ferris State University, I became Michigan’s youngest Director of Community Corrections. Life took an unexpected and wonderful turn when I met my husband, Mike, online. He brought me to Illinois, where we bounced around the suburbs and eventually found our forever home here in Plainfield to raise our twins.

Motherhood transformed me in ways I cannot describe. My primary focus shifted to my children's safety, education, and mental health. I volunteered in various nonprofits, but when the twins went to school, I jumped headfirst into the PTA. In the twins' kindergarten year, I co-founded LincolnGrows, an outdoor classroom initiative designed for hands-on learning. While collaborating with local leaders on this project, I discovered my passion for Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)—designing spaces to enhance safety and connection. I earned my CPTED professional designation in 2023.

Since attending my first Plainfield Community Visioning Workshop a few years ago, I have been a voracious student of urban planning—from reading 600-page books on parking to taking EdX courses on sustainable development—I believe in learning from industry leaders and taking hands-on action to ensure the best outcomes for Plainfield. In 2023, I was proudly appointed to the Plan Commission to advocate for safe, thoughtful development in our village.

As a substitute teacher in PSD202, I witness the challenges and opportunities our families face. My roles as educator, parent, and public servant fuel my commitment to listening, collaborating, and making Plainfield better for everyone.

If not found in the classroom or the ball field: you can catch me playing disc golf, harvesting spinach in my garden, or riding my bike around town to my favorite "third places".
